What cabling does a dealership showroom need?
A dealership showroom typically needs Cat6A data drops for sales desks, finance offices, reception, and BDC stations, plus ceiling-mounted wireless access points with PoE cabling and dedicated drops for digital signage or video walls. What are service bay data drops?
Service bay data drops are wired Ethernet connections placed at each service bay so DMS terminals, diagnostic tools, and shop devices can connect to the dealership network. Placing the drop at the exact work position prevents technicians from running loose patch cables across the shop floor.
Do dealership lots need fiber cabling?
Yes, if the lot is large enough that cable runs to cameras or access points exceed the 100-meter limit for copper Ethernet. Many DFW dealerships on highway frontage properties have lots that stretch well beyond that distance. A fiber backbone run from the main building to a junction box or IDF at the far end of the lot solves the distance problem and provides higher bandwidth for multiple cameras.
What cable is best for outdoor dealership cameras?
Outdoor-rated Cat6 with a UV-resistant jacket is the standard for camera runs that stay within 100 meters. The cable needs to run inside weatherproof conduit to protect it from sun, moisture, and pests. For longer runs, outdoor-rated fiber optic cable with armored or gel-filled construction is the better option. Regular indoor Ethernet cable should never be used outdoors, even inside conduit.
How does PoE help dealership Wi-Fi and cameras?
Power over Ethernet (PoE) sends electrical power and data over the same Ethernet cable, so devices like wireless access points, IP cameras, and VoIP phones do not need a separate power outlet at each location. This is especially useful for ceiling-mounted APs in the showroom and remote cameras on outdoor light poles where running separate power would be expensive. Cat6A is recommended for higher-wattage PoE devices because it handles the heat from power delivery better than Cat6.
